Book Buyer/Manager (title & salary commensurate with experience)
Remote locations considered

Purpose – Contribute to all aspects of managing the book category & bookstores at Hudson, with a focus on buying, inventory management, and promotions.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Space & Inventory Tracking, Analysis, Management

  • Ongoing & annual budgeting

  • Conduct ongoing market & company analysis on sales, margin and all relevant KPIs. Utilize data and trend monitoring to adjust selection, merchandising & positioning to drive results.

  • Select titles, create planograms and inventory allocations, process orders, and review performance of selections.

  • Manage returns

  • Monitor/participate in industry dialogues – trade publications, events, relationships, etc. to stay on top of trends in books, travel, and general retail – titles, marketing, customer service, technology, etc..

  • Effectively communicate action plans, results, recommendations & opportunities via phone calls, email, formal and informal presentations, internally and externally for the book category and relevant store concepts.

  • Design, pitch & execute customer marketing & promotional campaigns – in store, online, via social media

  • Create and maintain good vendor relationships. Negotiate supply agreements.

  • Plan events

  • Maintain clear, detailed, timely records of promotions & buys

  • Coordinate & collaborate with other departments

  • Manage day-to-day business issues and opportunities


  • Excellent analytical and planning skills, business acumen, and comprehensive understanding of book & retail economics

  • Broad & deep knowledge of books & the book industry

  • Comfortable working in a nontraditional environment – have the ability to create & develop effective processes & problem solve, but have the flexibility to adapt & conform as necessary

  • Familiarity with Edelweiss, SAP and/or Basil book system a plus

  • Attention to detail & organization

  • Demonstrated understanding of various store brands relative to key responsibilities

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • History of creative contribution in the workplace.

  • Effective & efficient - ability to perform multifaceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities; good planning and project management capabilities.

  • Positive and determined attitude

  • Enthusiasm to work for and contribute to a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment.

  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across departments and divisions

  • Some travel may be required


  • 5+ years of relevant experience, Technical proficiency required – Excel, Word, PPT, etc.
